School Harassment When Withdrawing Your Child

wirraglen4homeschool

School principles have the obligation to monitor the attendance of the children enrolled at their schools, and because the law is not well-known among everyone, withdrawing your child from the school can mean you will have to instruct all the parties not only about your decision but also what the law requires.

That means that when you withdraw your child, you might receive a letter from the school needing information regarding your decision to home school.

So first, let's take a look at the law:

In the Education Act, section 229 it says:

"A child is not eligible for provisional registration, or registration, for home education while the child is enrolled at a State school or non-State school."

So that means that the first step is to withdraw your children from the school and then move into registering them in the home education system as soon as possible.

For this process you will not need any documents or declaration from the school, you as the parent/guardian is the only one responsible for choosing where your child will be educated, according to the Education Act itself.

If during this process the school asks for proof of registration you can send them a letter stating your decision and advising them to contact the Home Education Unit (HEU) in case of any further questions.

We have created a template letter for you to send to the school if they contact you about your decision to withdraw your child.
