How to Create a Summary for Home Education

One of the important requirements when registering our children with the Home Education Unit, is to create and include a summary for the following year of studies.

But what is this Summary?

The summary is a document which contain the academic hopes for the coming year. This document will briefly outline the experiences your child might be exposed to in each learning area that year.

Why is this important?

With this document, you will be able to show to the Home Education Unit an overview of the education your child might engage with in the coming year. It could also be useful when you reach the reporting phase at the end of the year, when you can go back to this initial plan and review, possibly with your child, the child's experiences and progress for that year.

How can we create this summary?

For the Summary, if you wish, you can use the ACARA Parent Guide as a model from which to note what your child could be studying at one or more grade levels. Another option is to build your own study plan.

If you choose to build your own Summary, remember to keep in mind the Education Act and the Alice Springs Declaration. Remember there are many ways for you to create a Summary plan for your child’s education.

Each child is different, so make sure you (and your child) personalise the Summary Plan to your child's needs. That way your plan overview will be not only relevant, but also practical.

We've created a Summary example using the ACARA Parent Guide for a fictitious character named Jane Williams.

This summary is for the English subject area only and has modified the years 3 and 4 guide from the ACARA Parent Guide. Please note, your Summary program is meant to be flexible.

As you can see, the original document is copied from the ACARA Parent Guide. The personalised document uses the ACARA Parent Guide information but updates it specifically to suit Jane's needs, having in mind what she might be able to achieve. You can mix and match from the various year levels if that suits your child.

The same method can be used for each of the ACARA Parent Guide Subject areas.

You can also build your Summary with goals from the Alice Springs Declaration, or from your statements in the High-Quality Education section of your Registration submission.

Remember, it is the parent who is legally responsible for providing the education for her child. What and how your child learns is your choice and the Summary program needs to be a reasonable attempt to fit the educational needs of the child. The Alice Springs Statement is a good resource here.

Bear in mind though, the demonstration of a High-Quality education comes first in the legislation. The Summary comes second. You can blend the two together or separate them.
